Pearl Health Care: Foot Reflexology & Head, Shoulder Massage $30-$35

Pearl Health Care caters for treatments which focuses on the health benefits of massage and foot reflexology and does not labelled themselves as a spa. It is one of the massage centres that have been mushrooming in Brunei to cater the new generation of working young adults, who have become used to pampering and indulgence. This particular group of people do café in late afternoons after work, chit-chat with their friends hours about their days, take advantage of the one day Singapore trips as promoted by RBA to do their much needed shopping for bags etc and on the counter skin care products found in Orchard Road and particular like to be pampered by having regular facials and massages. Massage centres such as Pearl Health Care aims to attract this group of people because they tend to come back and speak of it to their similar circles of friends. Basically they are the reason for such booming business in the spa and beauty services industry in Brunei.

So after a friend’s mentioning of the place, I decided to visit Pearl Health Care in the busy Kiulap area. Prior to the treatment, I was asked to register my details and was given a membership card for future use. Good a loyalty program of some sort. I chose the Foot Reflexology with the Head, Shoulder Massage – the prices are affordable. The interior of the place was average and the seats vaguely remind me of rattan furniture with cushions at my grandparents’ old place. The lighting was good, a good place to rest your eyes while having treatment. Then, I was ushered to a room to change with loose clothing provided by the Pearl Health Care. I was offered clothes which seemed to have not been washed and someone have worn it. I smelled hints of body odour from the clothes. Not so hygienic. Anyway – the treatment starts with getting a foot soak as usual and then with the foot reflexology. The massage therapist used a minty lotion which gives a cooling sensation to my feet – the pressure was comfortable and right for the foot reflexology.

Then the masseuse began to work his way to my head and shoulders. I felt weird having his hands which have massaged my feet and now he’s massaging my head. The minty lotion used was definitely not suitable as it causes irritation to my eyes, I began to feel uncomfortable. The shoulder and back massage was more like being pinched repeatedly and the cooling sensation caused from the mint lotion was a bit too much in my opinion.

Overall it was rather just an average massage but it turned out to be rather unhygienic. I had an itchy skin infection around my shoulder area after the massage – it could be from the used clothes, the minty lotion or the unhygienic hands of the masseuse or a combination of all of these. It took a week for the skin infection to go away and I have not been to Pearl Health Care ever since.

Please be aware of the hygiene of the clothes offered and the make sure your masseuse have properly washed their hands before touching your skin!

Verdict: 1/10
